August 12, 2008There are many things I am passionate about. In order to convey these ideals, I have written this essay in a creative format, using the alphabet to describe what I would do “if I ruled the world”.
If I ruled the world:
- I would ensure every child had Access to the basic necessities in life;
- I would instill in them a sense of pride and Belief in oneself because after all, the power for change lies within each of us;
- I would strive to ensure that every child had Clothes on their backs;
- That everyone had the ability to Develop their minds by being given resources and tools;
- I would fight to ensure that every child had the access and ability to achieve universal Education; a place where they could learn in a safe and comfortable environment;
- That children had the Freedom to think, act and move freely;
- I would promote Gender equality and the empowerment of women;
- I would improve overall Healthcare;
- I would ensure that Immunization & vaccinations were readily available;
- That people had access to Jobs;
- That people had access to Knowledge;
- I would promote Love;
- I would ensure that society had sufficient Money to live a comfortable life;
- That everyone had proper Nutrition;
- That people had access to Opportunities;
- I would help to alleviate Poverty and hunger;
- I would keep children stimulated by encouraging them to ask Questions…to engage in critical thinking and open dialogue;
- By making books and libraries available, I would ensure that all children could Read;
- I would promote environmental awareness and the importance of Sustainability, in order to promote self-sufficiency;
- I would ensure that everyone had access to Training;
- I would teach children to respect the values of others in order to live in harmony with diverse cultures. Understanding others beliefs, cultures and values is essential to achieving Unity;
- I would eradicate Violence and abuse;
- I would ensure that children had clean and running Water;
- By promoting unity and living harmoniously with diverse cultures, I would strive to eradicate Xenophobia, discrimination and ethnocentrism;
- I would encourage the Youth to find their own voice and become active in politics in order to ensure an equitable system of justice. They only way to influence change is to become part of that change. As Gandhi once said, ‘be the change you want to see in the world”;
- I would advocate for Zero tolerance of war, destruction, and all forms of conflict.
If I ruled the world, my job would be a demanding one, but not an impossible one. With collective efforts to ensure these basic rights, I believe change can come. This is my dream. The real power of Martin Luther King was not only that he had a dream, but that he could describe it, that it became public, and therefore, became accessible to millions of people.
